So let me break it down in a simple, real way.
First — Retinoids
Retinoid is just the umbrella term for all vitamin A derivatives.
So when you hear retinoid, it can include:
• Retinol
• Retinal
• Tretinoin
It’s basically the category everything falls under.
Retinol (What Most of You Are Using)
Retinol is what you’ll typically find in skincare products.
It has to convert in your skin to become active, so:
• It works a little slower
• It’s more gentle
• It’s easier for most people to tolerate
This is usually where I start a lot of my clients, especially if your skin is sensitive or you’re new to vitamin A.
Tretinoin (Prescription Strength)
Tretinoin is the stronger, prescription version.
It’s already active when you put it on your skin, which means:
• It works faster
• It’s stronger
• It can also cause more dryness, peeling, and irritation
It’s great for acne, texture, and anti-aging — but it’s not always the best starting point for everyone.
Here’s My Honest Take
Stronger is not always better.
I’ve seen clients get amazing results with the right retinol, used consistently and paired correctly. And I’ve also seen people struggle on tretinoin because their skin barrier just wasn’t ready for it.
What Actually Matters
It’s not just about which one you choose it’s about:
• Using the right strength for your skin
• Being consistent
• Supporting your barrier
• And not overdoing it
