Why Do I Have Spider Veins?

Spider veins are damaged blood vessels beneath the skin that form thin, red or blue lines. These lines can sometimes resemble a spider’s web or a tree branch pattern. Before we treat your veins, it helps to understand where they come from. First, know that spider veins are incredibly common and usually stem from factors out of your control, such as:

  • Genetics: If your mother or grandmother had spider veins, you’re far more likely to develop them.
  • Hormones: Pregnancy, hormonal shifts and birth control can weaken vein walls, making them more visible.
  • Lifestyle: Jobs that require prolonged standing, such as nursing or teaching, put extra pressure on leg veins over time.

What to Expect From Sclerotherapy

During your sclerotherapy session, one of our practitioners will inject a specialized solution into the targeted veins. The procedure is minimally painful and has minimal downtime, allowing you to return to your daily activities quickly. Sclerotherapy provides visible results over time as the treated veins gradually fade away. Say hello to smoother, healthier legs and the confidence to show them off.

Is Sclerotherapy Right for You?

Sclerotherapy is an excellent option if you have spider veins or small varicose veins and wish to improve the appearance of your legs. A consultation with our experts can determine whether this treatment is suitable for you.

Sclerotherapy Post-Care Instructions

We want your sclerotherapy non-surgical vein treatment to be as successful as possible. For this reason, we recommend several measures to ensure optimal results:

The First 24 Hours: Movement and Compression

Immediately after the procedure, you may need to put on a support hose — also known as compression stockings — and walk for 10 to 30 minutes. Be sure to have loose-fitting slacks or a skirt and comfortable walking shoes with you. Wearing compression for three to seven days shows better results than no compression at all. Please consider 40–50 mmHg compression — even 10–20 mmHg is better than none. You can buy compression garments at most drug stores.

You can gently remove the taped compression pads or cotton balls two to twenty-four hours after your procedure, but consult your sclerotherapist for advice on the exact timing. If redness or a rash develops — possibly due to tape sensitivity — remove the tape and put on support stockings. We recommend sleeping with your support hose the first night, then wearing them during the day for approximately one week.

Activity and Exercise Guidelines

You can maintain normal activities after your injection. Exercise is an important part of the healing process, and we encourage you to walk as much as possible and avoid standing in one position for prolonged periods. Engage in light movement, like a short walk or gentle bike ride, twice a day to promote healing. Walking can also help reduce any slight aching or throbbing you experience during the first two days after your treatment.

However, avoid strenuous physical activities such as weightlifting, running or high-impact aerobics for the first 48 to 72 hours after sclerotherapy.

Managing Comfort and Medications

If you feel sore or uncomfortable, you can take acetaminophen — like Tylenol — for relief. Avoid taking blood-thinning medications for the first 24 to 48 hours, such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Anaprox or Vioxx. If discomfort continues, you may take a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug like ibuprofen with food if you have no sensitivity to these medications. If you experience any redness or small lumps, apply warm compresses several times a day. For open areas, apply a topical antibiotic like Polysporin ointment, but avoid Neosporin and other triple antibiotic ointments.

The vessels may darken in color or feel slightly tender. This is a normal response and may clear on its own, or you can treat it at your next session. Bruising may also occur, especially after the first treatment. This is normal and temporary.

Showering, Sun and Skincare

You may apply lotion and creams 24 to 48 hours after treatment. Be sure to avoid long hot baths, showers and saunas for one to two weeks following your treatment. You can cool your legs with cold water after bathing. Avoid sunbathing and UV exposure for at least 7–10 days, as treated areas may be more sensitive to sunlight and prone to hyperpigmentation. Finally, avoid swimming in chlorinated pools for 48 hours post-treatment.

Healing Timeline

Remember, spider veins take years to develop, so they won’t disappear overnight. You can expect visible fading and lightening to occur anywhere from 10 days to 2 weeks, though it may be longer for some individuals. Please be patient and allow time for the healing process. Always bring your support hose and a pair of shorts or leotards to your appointments. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your treatment, please do not hesitate to call us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Want to know more about vein injections for spider veins? Here are the most common questions we get:

Though they're most commonly found on the legs, spider veins can develop anywhere, including your face, chest and abdomen.
Sclerotherapy is generally well-tolerated, and most patients experience minimal discomfort. We often apply a numbing cream or local anesthesia to enhance comfort during the procedure, but most clients describe the sensation as no more than a tiny mosquito bite.
The time frame for visible results can vary, but most patients notice a gradual improvement over several weeks to months as the treated veins fade. You may need multiple sessions for optimal results.
Common side effects may include temporary redness, bruising or swelling at the injection site. These effects usually subside within a few days. Serious complications are rare, but you can discuss them during your consultation.
The duration of results can vary among individuals, but many people find that sclerotherapy is a long-lasting solution. Factors such as lifestyle, genetics and additional treatments can influence the longevity of results.
